Mousinho: Injuries Clearing Ahead Of Easter Double

Boss expecting tough Wycombe

28 March 2024

It has been a recurring issue for Pompey this season – albeit not one that has prevented them from reaching the League One summit.

The treatment room at the training ground has been home to plenty of players nursing long-term injuries.

Terry Devlin, Joe Morrell, Regan Poole and Alex Robertson will unfortunately not be featuring again this season.

But the good news for John Mousinho is that several others are now either available for the Good Friday trip to Wycombe or are nearing a return to action.

The Blues boss said: “The break we’ve had has reenergised the squad and allowed us to get some players back closer.

“Paddy Lane obviously featured for Northern Ireland after missing Peterborough, while it took Joe Rafferty a few more days to shrug off the illness.

“Kusini Yengi will come back from Australia and he’s a fit young lad who should be raring to go, so I don’t see any problems there.

“Tino Anjorin has had a full week of training with us and there are no concerns, so he’s available for selection again.

“Callum Lang is progressing well, but not quite there yet. We’re looking at possibly the Shrewsbury game or, if not, Bolton to have him back.

“We’ve had Connor Ogilvie in and out of training as a precaution and we suspect that he’ll also be back after the Easter matches.

“Tom Lowery is not quite as advanced and we want to be cautious not to overload him, so Bolton is a realistic return date.

“Christian Saydee has been out on the grass, but not with the group, and is probably 50-50 for Derby, while Ben Stevenson is available for Friday.”

Mousinho is looking forward to a busy Easter that starts with a trip to face a Wycombe side who have won their past three matches.

He said: “We’ve looked at a lot of big games this season and it seems like they might be defining at the time.

“An example that comes to mind is when we played Bolton back in December and they could have gone top if they’d beat us.

“But that win didn’t define our season, just like a defeat wouldn’t have, so we want to keep our feet on the ground.

“We’ll obviously do our best to come away with six points from the Easter games, but we won’t have cracked anything if we do and it’s the same if it’s the other way.

“So our focus is on Friday and facing an in-form Wycombe side, who strengthened really well in January.

“They’re playing some nice football and are an attacking threat, which we’ll have to be wary of – they’re a different proposition since the turn of the year.”
